Microtel supplies advanced SDSL networking system for Scottish housing association

Microtel, the Crayford based supplier of communications and interfacing solutions, has just completed a major network installation based on SDSL (Sub-Rate Digital Subscriber Line) technology for a leading Glasgow Housing Association.

The system, one of the most advanced yet installed in the UK, provides inter-office links with bandwidth for both voice and date connectivity between head office and satellite branches.

A dramatic cost reduction has been achieved for the housing association by the use of EPS 8 circuits with SDSL equipment. Unlike traditional digital leased-line circuits, this offers a payback after nine months, as well as ongoing savings of £3000 per annum.

For the Scottish project, Microtel acted as the systems integrator for a package that included Crocus SHDSL modems, Eloquence multiplexers and Microtel's own ASC300 convertors.

SDSL technology, which has been slow to be deployed by the major telecommunications operators, can be used to provide a digital circuit at up to 2 Mbit/s between two sites located in the same exchange area via EPS copper lines or private copper circuits. Presentation to the customer's equipment may be via G703, X21, V35 or bridge and router connections. Other xDSL products available from Microtel include SHDSL, HSDL and SDSL routers.
