MICROTEL/35/1

NEW PRODUCT

Voice Trunking Gateway provides 16:1 compressed voice transmission for bandwidth saving

The RAD VMUX available in the UK from Microtel, is a unique voice trunking gateway that can provide compressed voice transmission over IP, MPLS, Ethernet, or TDM networks.

The VMUX uses powerful voice processing algorithms to compress up to 16 full E1/T1 circuits over a single E1/T1, serial or packet-based IP uplink, so that 30 voice channels require less than 256 kbit/s of bandwidth.

The product uses RAD's TDMoIP technology to emulate voice circuits (including signalling) transparently over IP, MPLS or Ethernet networks, and therefore eliminates the need for expensive E1/T1 voice connections between locations. Unlike VoIP solutions, the VMUX provides transparent support for any standard or proprietary signalling protocol, including SS7, ISDN PR1, Q.Sig, and DPNSS.

In addition to providing support for voice activity detection (VAD), silence suppression and comfort noise generation (CNG), the VMUX achieves extra efficiencies as a result of the TDMoIP framing and aggregation technique that delivers superior bandwidth-efficiency (down to 4 kbit/s per channel) and ensures call quality that rivals that of PSTN toll calls. Packet latency, jitter and call set-up times are all significantly lower than with VoIP solutions.

The VMUX family supports sites with capacities ranging from fractional E1/T1 to a large number of E1 or T1 links (where any IP switch/router can serve as a grooming device). Low performance Ethernet links, such as Wireless Local Loop or public Internet, are also supported.

Also included in the VMUX family are standard VoIP SIP gateway solutions. The products support a wide range of FXS ports, Euro ISDN BR1 and PR1 interfaces for remote gateways, and VoIP SIP voice cards for the central unit. Thus a VMUX-2100 central unit can support a hybrid network of TDMoIP (voice trunking) and VoIP SIP trunks.
